
Brisbane, 2 January: Brisbane Heat secured a four-wicket victory against Melbourne Stars in the 20th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2025-26 season, ending the winning streak of Melbourne Stars.
This was Melbourne Stars’ first defeat of the season. The team has won four out of five matches so far and leads the points table with a net run rate of +1.379. Brisbane Heat, having won three of six games, moved up to fourth place in the standings.
Playing at The Gabba on Friday, Melbourne Stars lost the toss and were put into bat. They scored 195 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs. The opening pair of Sam Harper and Thomas Rogers gave the team a strong start, adding 52 runs in 5.3 overs.
Harper scored 37 runs off 23 balls, including one six and five fours, before getting out. Rogers contributed 13 runs off 12 balls. By the time the team reached 56 runs, both openers had been dismissed.
Captain Marcus Stoinis and Campbell Kellaway then added 53 runs in 32 balls for the third wicket, taking the total to 109. Stoinis scored 43 runs off 35 balls, while Kellaway made 29 runs off 14 balls. Later, Blake McDonald (37 not out) and Hilton Cartwright (26 not out) built an unbroken partnership of 58 runs in 22 balls for the seventh wicket, helping the team reach a strong total.
From the opposition, Thomas Balkin took two wickets, while Xavier Bartlett, Ole Patterson, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Matt Renshaw claimed one wicket each.
In response, Brisbane Heat chased down the target in 19.4 overs despite early setbacks, losing Jack Wildermuth (15) and Colin Munro (3) by the time the score was 34.
Captain Nathan McSweeney steadied the innings with Matt Renshaw, adding 69 runs for the third wicket. McSweeney scored 43 runs off 31 balls with one six and five fours before getting out. Renshaw contributed 41 runs off 27 balls.
By the time the third-wicket partnership ended, Brisbane Heat had lost six wickets for 133 runs. Then Max Bryant and Xavier Bartlett forged an unbeaten 65-run stand in 24 balls for the seventh wicket to secure the win.
Bryant remained not out on 48 runs off 26 balls, hitting four sixes and three fours. Bartlett also remained unbeaten, scoring 21 runs off 9 balls.
For Melbourne Stars, Peter Siddle and Mitchell Swepson took two wickets each, while Tom Curran and Harris Rauf claimed one wicket apiece.
