Imphal, September 3: Manipur’s Home Minister, Konthoujam Govindas Singh, emphasized the need for collective action to restore peace and normalcy in the state, which has been marred by ethnic violence since May 2023.
Responding to a ‘call attention motion’ raised by Congress MLA Keisham Meghchandra Singh in the assembly, the Home Minister stated that all sections of society must fulfill their responsibilities to achieve lasting peace and uphold the spirit of humanity.
During the discussion, he remarked, “We all must take responsibility and embrace the spirit of humanity to restore peace in the state.”
He also urged religious and community leaders across Manipur to step forward and play a constructive role in bridging the trust deficit between different communities and seeking solutions.
In response to another ‘call attention motion’ raised by Congress MLA Kangujam Ranjit Singh, the Home Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the people of Manipur and the state government to protect the state’s integrity and regional unity.
He clarified that there are no official reports regarding any land exchange agreements between India and Myanmar. Additionally, he informed the assembly that the fencing work along the international border is largely complete, while efforts to strengthen security and curb illegal activities along sensitive borders are ongoing.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh presented the first batch of ‘supplementary grant demands’ for the financial year 2026-27 in front of the assembly.
This includes a total amount of ₹3,861 crores, comprising 31 demands and one appropriation. Of this total, ₹12 crores will be drawn from the state’s consolidated fund, while voting will be conducted in the assembly for ₹3,849 crores.
While presenting the supplementary grant, the Chief Minister noted that nearly 90 percent of the requested amount is related to centrally sponsored schemes (CSS), NABARD-supported projects, and externally aided projects (EAP). He highlighted that the significant portion of external and centrally supported funds reflects the state government’s ongoing commitment to mobilizing additional resources for the effective implementation of development programs and various ongoing projects.
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of securing central assistance and external funding to timely complete major development initiatives in the state.
Later, he introduced eight bills for discussion in the assembly during the ongoing monsoon session. On Wednesday, the assembly proceedings also addressed issues related to peace restoration, the protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity, and the various concerns facing the state.
