Manipur CM Biren warns drug traffickers

Imphal, March 25 : Chief Minister N Biren Singh gave a strong warning to all drug traffickers operating in the region on Friday and said, “ surrender or face the consequences”. Asserting to the media at his cabinet secretariat, CM Biren who returned to power after the elections said the government would take strict measures against all drug traffickers. The Chief Minister said Imphal East police and a team of recently formed Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) arrested alleged illicit drug dealers identified as Md Mujibur Rahaman, Md Sher Khan and recovered drugs worth Rs 1.9 cr in local market and Rs 9 cr in the international market on Thursday. The seized items were displayed and it included 67,900 nos. of SP capsules, 350 nos. of WY tablets, 115 nos. of N10 tablets, 135 g of heroin powder, 8 bottles of cough syrup. Police should chase after drug traffickers and should not give excuses that the traffickers escaped, he said. Drone will be used to monitor the plantation of poppy plants and central forces will be used wherever necessary, he said. Manipur police have been working hard to stop drug menace but still, the objective of completely stopping drug trade has not yet been achieved. The BJP led government which was formed for the second time will start a mass crackdown in the state, he added. He also asked police to provide security to all those including lawyers who are working in the field so that they can work freely without any threat. Instructions are issued to all police stations, Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB) and all other agencies to stop drug trafficking on a war footing. Biren further said an alarming report has come that large numbers of youths were addicted to drugs resulting in the inability to conceive and facing dangerous health conditions. Many women had to take medical treatment like IVF to get children due to drug dependence which is shocking, he added. Drug issue should not be politicized and he appealed to all to p sh anybody involved in corruption and drug, he added. He appealed to police and lawyers not to succumb to the political pressure given to them. Compulsory imprisonment of one year and above for those involved in trafficking has been strictly imposed, he said. Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), which has been formed recently, consists of police, civil officials, cyber experts, central security agencies and it will work independently without any interference, he said.
