
Gurugram, February 21: Vungjagin Valte, the BJP MLA from the Thanlon assembly constituency in Manipur, passed away on Saturday at a private hospital in Gurugram. He was 62 years old. According to officials, he had been receiving treatment since suffering severe injuries during a mob attack amid ethnic violence on May 4, 2023.
Valte, who belonged to the Zo ethnic community, was elected to the Manipur Assembly from the Thanlon area in Churachandpur district. Following the violent incident, he underwent extensive treatment in Delhi and later resided in the Kukis-dominated Churachandpur district.
Due to deteriorating health, he was airlifted from Imphal to New Delhi on February 8 and admitted to a private hospital in Gurugram, where he breathed his last on Saturday afternoon.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, among other leaders and organizations, expressed their sorrow over his passing.
PM Modi took to social media platform X, stating that Vungjagin Valte would be remembered for his exemplary service to the people of Manipur. He dedicated himself to bringing positive change to society, and his interventions in the Assembly were always meaningful.
The Governor also expressed that Valte’s untimely demise is an irreparable loss to the people of Manipur and public life. He extended condolences to the grieving family and prayed for the peace of the departed soul.
Chief Minister Singh remarked that Valte was not only a dedicated public representative but also a compassionate leader who devoted his entire life to serving the people. He noted that Valte’s commitment to the welfare, progress, and overall development of the state reflected the true spirit of selfless service.
It is noteworthy that Valte was attacked after attending a meeting with former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh in Imphal on May 4, 2023. He sustained multiple serious injuries and suffered partial paralysis. The attack also resulted in the death of his driver.
Valte had previously called for unity among community members amid the ongoing ethnic crisis in Manipur. His passing has cast a shadow of mourning over the political landscape of the state.
