Kolkata, May 8: Despite the dissolution of the 17th Assembly in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has not updated her social media profiles. Officially, she is now the ‘former Chief Minister’ of West Bengal, yet her profiles still display the ‘Chief Minister’ tag.
Mamata Banerjee continues to use the title ‘Honorable Chief Minister, West Bengal’ on her official social media accounts, including Facebook and X. Despite her defeat, she has refused to resign from the Chief Minister position, a stance she maintains online.
Earlier on Thursday, West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi dissolved the 17th Assembly. The Assembly’s term ended on May 7, prompting the Governor to exercise his powers under Article 174(2)(b) of the Constitution to dissolve it. A letter from the Lok Bhavan in Kolkata confirmed that the dissolution order was effective immediately.
Mamata Banerjee became Chief Minister for the third time after winning the 17th Assembly elections in 2021. She has held power since 2011. However, this election cycle saw her face a significant defeat, with the Trinamool Congress failing to maintain its dominance in Bengal. Mamata also lost her seat in Bhawanipur.
In the 2026 Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved a substantial victory, securing 207 out of 293 seats, while the Trinamool Congress managed only 80. Following the election loss, Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP and the Election Commission of ‘stealing 100 seats’ and has refused to step down as Chief Minister.
Nonetheless, a new Assembly will be formed in West Bengal after the 2026 elections, and the BJP is currently in the process of selecting its Chief Minister.
