Mamata Banerjee Refuses to Resign, Faces Criticism as Democracy Under Threat

New Delhi, May 6: Following a significant defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing mounting criticism for her refusal to resign from her position as the head of the Trinamool Congress. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma and social activist Ashok Pandit have condemned her stubbornness, labeling it an attack on democracy.

Ram Gopal Varma took to social media platform X, stating, “After spending decades in politics and 15 years as Chief Minister, I cannot believe Mamata Banerjee is ignoring the fact that institutions are embedded in the DNA of democracy. Attacking them is essentially an assault on democracy itself.”

He urged Banerjee to respect democratic institutions, emphasizing that resigning after election results is a democratic tradition. Her disregard for this tradition, he argued, is fundamentally wrong.

On the other hand, Ashok Pandit, known for his outspoken views on national issues, made serious allegations against Banerjee on Instagram. He claimed, “Mamata Banerjee should be arrested and imprisoned for the crimes committed during her tenure. She is responsible for the killings of Hindus, rapes, genocide, and mass exodus. Her criminal mindset poses a danger to society, and she requires serious medical help.”

Pandit accused Banerjee of inciting communal violence and perpetrating atrocities against the Hindu community. He pointed out that her policies have led to increased violence and migration in the state.

In the recent election results, the BJP performed remarkably well, securing 206 seats, while the Trinamool Congress managed only 81. Banerjee herself lost her Bhawanipur seat to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari by over 15,000 votes, intensifying the criticism against her.

Many are arguing that her decision to remain in office despite the electoral mandate contradicts democratic values. They believe Banerjee should honor the democratic tradition by accepting the people’s verdict.
