Mumbai: The film ‘Mardaani 3’ is currently making waves at the box office and has been widely appreciated by audiences. Known for addressing sensitive social issues, the ‘Mardaani’ franchise continues this trend. Actress Mallika Prasad, who plays the antagonist ‘Amma’ in the latest installment, shared her thoughts on the character and the social message behind it in a recent interview.
Mallika explained, “It is easy to label Amma as just evil, but understanding her is more complex. Amma is not born as a malicious force; she is a product of a society riddled with injustice, corruption, and exploitation. When a person is repeatedly denied their rights and justice, the system gradually hardens and transforms them into something dangerous. Amma operates within this very system that has failed her.”
She added, “This is a frightening truth, but our society essentially creates its own enemies. Everyday injustices, neglect, and systemic failures combine to give rise to such characters. Amma is the face of broken trust and denied justice. I didn’t see her merely as a villain, but as a human being shaped by society.”
Mallika also reflected on the impact of strong villains in cinema, saying, “Powerful antagonists like Mogambo and Gabbar Singh remain etched in the audience’s memory because they not only instill fear but also drive the story forward.”
She further remarked, “Portraying a female villain carries even greater responsibility. The character cannot be limited to anger or showmanship alone. It’s vital to depict emotions, pain, and moments of humanity. This is what makes the character authentic and impactful. Finding humanity in a villain is the most challenging yet essential task.”
