Mumbai, May 20: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Mumbai has uncovered a sophisticated gold smuggling ring during a targeted operation named ‘Operation Golden Drop’ at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMI) on Wednesday.
According to the DRI, acting on specific intelligence, officials seized approximately three kilograms of foreign-origin gold valued at around ₹4.8 crore and arrested one suspect.
The investigation has revealed a well-organized methodology. The smuggled gold was converted into a wax-like substance and concealed in specially designed egg-shaped capsules. Allegedly, these capsules were ingested by passengers who then brought them into Mumbai.
The DRI reported that the smuggled gold was later handed over to a cleaning staff member working at a food outlet within the airport premises. The employee is accused of secretly aiding in the transportation of the gold outside the airport. The suspect has been apprehended.
Officials stated that this operation has exposed an organized network attempting to exploit transit passenger channels and airport support systems to smuggle gold into the country while evading customs and regulatory scrutiny.
This seizure is significant amid the government’s ongoing efforts to curb gold smuggling and protect the country’s economic interests, especially in light of recent customs hikes on gold aimed at preserving valuable foreign currency. Further investigations are underway.
Previously, on May 14, the DRI seized diamonds worth over ₹5.7 crore at CSMI Airport and arrested two individuals for allegedly attempting to smuggle them. Based on intelligence, the suspects were intercepted at Mumbai Airport. During questioning, both admitted to concealing two capsules inside their bodies.
Subsequently, 1,624 carats of diamonds were recovered, with a total estimated value of approximately ₹5.70 crore.
