Ranchi, May 10: The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Jharkhand has revealed a significant cyber fraud case, arresting a suspect from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. The accused is charged with defrauding individuals of millions by luring them into Forex trading through WhatsApp.
According to CID reports, the operation was conducted under case number 27/26 registered at the cyber crime police station in Ranchi. A victim filed a complaint stating they were added to a WhatsApp group named ‘Foreground.’ Members of this group enticed the victim with promises of substantial profits from investing in foreign exchange trading.
Investigations revealed that the fraudsters initially gained the victim’s trust by showcasing false profit details on a fake website. The victim was encouraged to invest after observing the purportedly increasing profits displayed on the site. Subsequently, the victim was persuaded to transfer money into various bank accounts under the guise of investment.
Police reports indicate that the total amount defrauded from the victim reached ₹8.52 crore. Upon realizing the deception, the victim lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police. Technical investigations and digital evidence pointed to the fraud being linked to Uttar Pradesh.
Following this, a team from Jharkhand police, in collaboration with Mirzapur police, conducted a raid and apprehended the accused, Brijesh Singh, who is reportedly a resident of Mirzapur district. Authorities recovered a mobile phone, SIM cards, debit cards, and a checkbook used in the crime from the suspect.
Investigative agencies are now working to determine how many more individuals are involved in this gang and whether similar scams have occurred in other states. CID officials have urged the public to avoid trusting any investment proposals received via social media or WhatsApp without thorough verification. They also advised reporting any suspicious online activities to the cyber police immediately.
