Mumbai, May 1: Harshvardhan Sapkal, the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, has accused the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition of attempting to transform the progressive ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar into a “cow belt.”
The term “cow belt” refers to regions in North and Central India where Hindi is the dominant language, and the cow holds significant religious and cultural importance.
During a celebration held on Maharashtra Day and Labour Day, Sapkal urged citizens to unite against forces that are trying to tarnish “Maharashtra’s culture” by inciting communal and caste-based conflicts.
After extending his best wishes to the public and workers, he emphasized the state’s rich heritage. He noted that Maharashtra is a land shaped by the thoughts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, and Babasaheb Ambedkar, and added that it is also blessed by the teachings of the Warkari sect that promote equality.
However, he warned that this identity is under threat. He claimed that processes like delimitation are being used to diminish Maharashtra’s political significance at the national level.
Sapkal accused the government of diverting attention from real issues by sowing discord among castes and religions. He argued that while the government merely talks about women’s reservation, its actual decisions are detrimental to the interests of Marathi people and the state.
Criticizing the government’s promotional statements, he remarked that the real “missing link” lies within the state’s administration.
He pointed out clear gaps in law and order, administration, women’s safety, drought management, and the fight against corruption, stressing that the government needs to engage in self-reflection rather than just making statements.
Sapkal reaffirmed the strength of the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, quoting a saint’s couplet: “Ekameka sahayya karu, avaghe dharu supath” (Let us help each other and choose the right path together).
He stated that Congress is ready to lead based on its strength and emphasized that the “India” coalition is a formidable force at the national level. He noted that allied parties have acknowledged that Congress deserves adequate representation within the state.
