Maharashtras Marathi Language Mandate Sparks Controversy

Mumbai, April 26: The Maharashtra government’s decision to make Marathi mandatory for auto and taxi drivers has ignited a heated debate. In defense of this policy, Shiv Sena’s national spokesperson, Shaina NC, emphasized that the Marathi language is paramount for them.

Speaking to reporters, Shaina NC stated, “Marathi is our pride and identity. The Motor Vehicle Act mandates that any service provider, whether an auto-rickshaw driver or a taxi driver, must speak Marathi to facilitate ease for passengers.”

She further remarked, “Some individuals have politicized this issue for their opportunistic gains. However, we take pride in encouraging more people in the state to learn and speak Marathi.”

The Maharashtra government has mandated that from May 1, all licensed auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers must possess knowledge of the Marathi language. This includes the ability to read, write, and speak Marathi. Drivers who fail to demonstrate basic proficiency in the language risk having their licenses revoked.

In addition, Shaina NC addressed public health concerns. Citing Prime Minister Modi as an inspiration, she noted, “Citizens need to understand that India is becoming the ‘Diabetes Capital’. Why is obesity on the rise? Why are cancer cases increasing among women? We need to realize that maintaining mental balance, along with exercise and yoga, is crucial.”

She added, “While ministries are doing their part, citizens and NGOs must also contribute. Therefore, we organize events every Sunday in Mumbai. We strive to encourage maximum participation, including children and the elderly.”

Shaina NC reiterated that for the past 12 years, they have been hosting yoga sessions at Marine Drive. “We want the people of Mumbai to step outside and participate. In today’s fast-paced life, yoga is the only means to achieve peace and tranquility. Everyone must understand that ‘health is wealth’.”

The Shiv Sena spokesperson also highlighted that India has gifted yoga to the world. She expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Modi for popularizing yoga on an international scale.
