Mumbai, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Maharashtra’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal recently addressed the ongoing debate surrounding Maratha reservation. He firmly stated that the Kunbi and Maratha communities are distinct. While Kunbis are legally classified as OBCs, Bhujbal expressed strong opposition to any Kunbi members attempting to enter the OBC category through backdoor channels.
“The Supreme Court has already ruled that the Maratha community is not considered backward,” Bhujbal noted. He urged anyone with objections to pursue legal avenues, such as the High Court or Supreme Court. “This isn’t my opinion; it’s the Supreme Court’s position. If someone is a Kunbi, then they are, but people will not remain silent.”
Bhujbal further emphasized that those who disagree with the current classification should seek legal recourse. He encouraged peaceful protests and democratic expressions of dissent but cautioned against any undue pressure on ministers or officials. “We have taken our oaths without fear or bias. We will neither take sides nor work under duress,” he stated.
In response to potential protests led by Manoj Jarange, Bhujbal acknowledged the democratic right to voice opinions and organize demonstrations. “It’s up to them to decide who might be affected by their actions,” he remarked. Regarding reservation reforms, he acknowledged the complexity of demands across the nation. “We are currently discussing matters at the local level,” he concluded, indicating that any changes to reservation policies must be carefully considered to avoid unintended consequences for existing beneficiaries.
