Mumbai, February 22: Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, issued a challenge to the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Sunday, urging them to substantiate their allegations against the government during the budget session of the state legislature.

Speaking at a press conference following a cabinet meeting, Shinde criticized the opposition for making accusations outside the assembly instead of addressing issues within the house.

He stated that if the opposition possesses concrete evidence of corruption or administrative negligence, it should be presented in the legislature for formal discussion.

Shinde also questioned the unity of the opposition, noting that neither the assembly nor the legislative council has officially appointed a leader of the opposition. He clarified that the appointment of the leader of the opposition is the responsibility of the assembly speaker and the council chairman, with no involvement from the government.

The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that the government is focused on development and welfare programs. He mentioned the ‘Majhi Ladki Bahin’ scheme, asserting that the government’s work will be evident in discussions held in the assembly.

Shinde criticized the Youth Congress’s protest during the AI Summit in New Delhi, stating that such actions harm the country’s image.

Referring to a recent incident where a pillar collapsed at a metro construction site in Mulund, he noted that the government took immediate action. The concerned executive engineer was suspended, and a safety audit of all ongoing projects was ordered.

He announced that families of the victims would receive financial assistance of 500,000 rupees, and those injured would receive full medical treatment. Additionally, the MMRDA has pledged an extra 1.5 million rupees in compensation.

Shinde concluded by stating that the upcoming 2026-27 budget will focus on welfare and development, benefiting the citizens of the state.
