Mumbai, May 5: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reacted strongly to a significant birth-death record scam uncovered in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Mumbai BJP President and MLA Amit Satam has written to Mayor Ritu Tawde and BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, demanding the immediate suspension of the implicated officials and the filing of FIRs against them.
In his letter, Satam highlighted that the BMC investigation revealed discrepancies in over 87,000 birth and death records. Many suspicious entries were recorded on the SAP portal instead of the mandatory Civil Registration System (CRS), raising concerns about their authenticity. Satam stated, “The BMC should segregate all fraudulent registrations ward by ward and identify the Medical Health Officers (MHOs) involved. The guilty officials must be suspended immediately, and FIRs should be filed against them under appropriate sections.”
He described the scam as extremely serious, warning that it could allow infiltrators to easily obtain fake birth or death certificates. Satam emphasized, “This could enable them to penetrate the government system, posing a severe threat to the safety and security of Mumbai.”
According to BMC’s internal report, over 87,000 corrections were made through the SAP system between 2024 and 2026, while only 33,772 entries were recorded on the CRS portal. The investigation also revealed that several MHOs had made unauthorized changes to the outdated SAP-CPWM system, violating guidelines issued by India’s Registrar General.
Amit Satam has called for a transparent investigation into the entire matter and strict action against those responsible to prevent such scams in the future. He stressed in his letter, “In the interest of the public and the safety of the city, the BMC administration must take effective measures immediately. This scam related to fake documents is not just administrative negligence but could also represent a significant oversight of security.”
This case raises questions about the reliability of record maintenance in a metropolis like Mumbai. The BJP has escalated the issue, urging the Mayor and Commissioner to take prompt action. BMC sources confirm that the letter has been received and directives for an investigation have been issued. Opposition parties are also demanding accountability from the BMC administration regarding this scam.
