Bhopal, April 28: The Madhya Pradesh government has established a high-level committee to assess the feasibility of implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
This decision, announced by the Department of Law and Legislative Affairs, aims to bring uniformity to the diverse personal and family laws currently followed by various communities in the state. An official order was issued on Monday regarding this initiative.
At present, different provisions apply to matters such as marriage, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance across various communities. The newly formed committee will study these differences and work towards creating a framework that ensures equality and fairness for all citizens.
The committee will be chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prasad Desai. Other members include retired IAS officer Shatrughan Singh, legal expert Anup Nair, academic Gopal Sharma, and social worker Budhpal Singh.
Ajay Katesaria, Additional Secretary in the General Administration Department, has been appointed as the committee’s secretary.
Under its responsibilities, the committee will examine models adopted by states like Uttarakhand and Gujarat while considering Madhya Pradesh’s social, cultural, and economic realities. It will also invite suggestions and objections from the public, religious and social organizations, and subject matter experts.
Special emphasis will be placed on protecting the rights of women and children, as well as addressing contemporary issues such as the regulation of live-in relationships.
The committee has been instructed to submit its report, along with a draft bill, within 60 days. The government stated that this initiative aims to reduce future legal complexities and move towards a more coherent civil framework.
With this digitally signed order from Secretary Mukesh Kumar, the process has officially begun. Observers view this step as a move towards legal uniformity and administrative reform in the state.
