Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday described the rising tensions over Greenland with the United States as a strategic “wake-up call” for Europe. He reiterated France’s solidarity with Denmark and Greenland on this issue.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Paris alongside leaders from Denmark and Greenland, Macron said, “Recent events make it clear that Greenland’s status serves as a strategic warning for all of Europe — in terms of strengthening European sovereignty, contributing to Arctic security, countering foreign interference and disinformation, fighting climate change, and promoting sustainable development while reducing strategic dependencies through special partnerships.”
Macron emphasized that France remains fully committed to the principles of sovereignty and regional integrity alongside all European Union partners. He added that France will continue to uphold these principles in accordance with the United Nations Charter.
At the same event, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted the need for NATO to play a more active and significant role in the region, especially concerning Greenland and the High North.
Earlier, on January 22, Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen made it clear that sovereignty is a red line for his government, regardless of any pressure from the United States. At a press conference in Nuuk, he stated, “Our regional integrity and borders are red lines that cannot be crossed. Greenland will remain the Greenland we know today — a part of the Danish realm.”
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, where defence and foreign policy are controlled from Copenhagen. Since regaining office in 2025, US President Donald Trump has expressed multiple times his desire to “acquire” Greenland, a proposal consistently rejected by Europe.
