Lucknow, August 12 (Kiran News). The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved Phase 1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project, marking a significant expansion of the city’s metro network. The new corridor will be 11.165 km long, featuring a total of 12 stations — seven underground and five elevated — at a sanctioned cost of ₹5,801 crore.

Once completed, this expansion will make Lucknow the district with the longest operational metro rail network in Uttar Pradesh, covering 34 km in total.
The approval has been welcomed by BJP leaders and workers, who described it as a commendable step towards public welfare and development. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, noting on social media platform X that the project will not only ease the capital’s traffic congestion but also open new avenues for employment, tourism, and investment.
Phase 1B of the project represents a major leap in the city’s infrastructure development, aiming to seamlessly connect key areas of old Lucknow. These include major commercial hubs like Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk; the King George’s Medical University (KGMU), known for its critical healthcare services; and prominent tourist attractions such as Bara Imambara, Chhota Imambara, Bhool Bhulaiya, Ghantaghar, and Rumi Darwaza.
By integrating these vital locations into the metro network, Phase 1B is expected to improve connectivity, stimulate economic activity, boost tourism, and make urban travel easier for both residents and visitors. The expanded metro network will also help decongest the city’s busiest routes, improving road traffic flow and overall mobility.
