Rome, May 13: Luciano Darderi pulled off a significant upset in the ATP season on Tuesday. He staged a remarkable comeback to defeat second-seeded Alexander Zverev, securing his place in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open for the first time.
This victory marks Darderi’s first win against a top-10 player in his career. Since October, he has become the first player to defeat Zverev at the Masters 1000 level, following Jannik Sinner’s win.
The Italian player has now climbed to 17th in the live ATP rankings. In the next round, he will face young sensation Rafael Jodar, who previously became the first teenager to reach the Rome quarterfinals since Novak Djokovic in 2007.
Playing in front of a packed home crowd at Foro Italico, Darderi made a stunning comeback after trailing by a set and a break. He achieved a memorable victory with a score of 1-6, 7-6(10), 6-0, saving four match points in a tense second-set tiebreak. The match lasted 2 hours and 25 minutes.
At 24 years old, Darderi appeared to be on the brink of defeat as Zverev dominated with powerful baseline hitting in the first set and led 5-3 in the second. However, just when it seemed the match was slipping away, Darderi broke Zverev’s serve, pushing the match into a tiebreak.
The decisive tiebreak became a test of patience, with Zverev repeatedly coming close to victory but failing to capitalize on four match points. On the first match point, the German player hit a backhand into the net. On the second, Darderi maintained his position with a strong serve. He took advantage of Zverev’s forehand error on the third match point and executed an excellent drop volley under pressure on the fourth.
Ultimately, a costly double fault from Zverev allowed Darderi to win the tiebreak on his second set point, completely shifting the match’s momentum. In the decisive set, Darderi delivered a flawless performance, not dropping a single game, while the world number two struggled to recover from the mental setback.
