Kolkata, May 13: Leena Gangopadhyay has resigned from her position as the Chairperson of the West Bengal Women’s Commission (WBCW) following a change in government in West Bengal. She stepped down before the end of her term, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Gangopadhyay is a well-known writer, producer, and director in the Tollywood film industry. She has been a significant advocate for women’s rights and owns her own production company. She is also closely associated with the Trinamool Congress party.
She was appointed as the chairperson of the state women’s commission in July 2023, with her term set to conclude this July. However, after the government change, she decided to resign.
Notably, Gangopadhyay had expressed her desire to resign from the chairperson position a month and a half ago following the controversy surrounding the death of Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee. Banerjee drowned during a TV serial shoot in Odisha’s Talsari on March 29. The serial was produced by Gangopadhyay’s company. After his death, she claimed there was no water scene in the shoot, and he had gone into the sea himself. It later emerged that he had drowned during the filming.
Banerjee’s wife, actress Priyanka Sarkar, filed a complaint against Gangopadhyay and some members of the production company. A faction of Bengali actors, technicians, and directors voiced their discontent against Gangopadhyay and decided to sever ties with her production company. At that time, she indicated her willingness to resign to avoid any allegations of ‘influence’ in the investigation into Banerjee’s death. However, she did not resign at that moment.
Following the Trinamool Congress’s defeat in the assembly elections, Gangopadhyay submitted her resignation. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has come to power in the state after 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule under Mamata Banerjee. Recently, Suvendu Adhikari took the oath as Chief Minister, with the ceremony attended by PM Modi and other chief ministers and ministers from BJP-ruled states.
