Mumbai, May 5: Leela Samson is a prominent name in the world of Indian classical dance, having transformed Bharatanatyam into a vital part of her life. She decided to pursue dance at a very young age, a choice that ultimately defined her identity.
Born on May 6, 1951, in Koonoor, Tamil Nadu, Leela’s father, Benjamin Abraham Samson, was an officer in the Indian Navy, while her mother, Laila, had a deep passion for art and music. Growing up in such an artistic environment naturally inclined Leela towards the arts, with her mother encouraging her to pursue this path.
At just 9 years old, Leela was sent by her father to the renowned institution ‘Kalakshetra’ in Chennai, marking the true beginning of her journey. Here, she learned Bharatanatyam from the legendary guru Rukmini Devi Arundale and decided to dedicate her life to this art form.
While completing her education, Leela continued her dance training. Even after finishing her studies, she remained committed to mastering Bharatanatyam. Over time, her hard work paid off, and she became recognized as an exceptional dancer.
In the early stages of her career, Leela taught Bharatanatyam at the Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi. Gradually, she showcased her art not only across India but also internationally, performing in Europe, Africa, and America, thereby giving Indian dance a global platform.
In 1995, Leela founded a dance group named ‘Spanda’ aimed at presenting Bharatanatyam in innovative ways to engage the younger generation. She trained numerous students, many of whom went on to become accomplished artists themselves.
Leela Samson also took on administrative roles alongside her artistic endeavors. She served as the Director of Kalakshetra from 2005 to 2012 and held positions as Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi and head of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). During her tenure, she made significant contributions to the fields of art and culture.
In recognition of her contributions, she was honored with the Padma Shri award, along with several other prestigious accolades, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
