New Delhi, April 6: Former tennis star Leander Paes has been granted ‘X’ category security by the Ministry of Home Affairs ahead of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel will now be responsible for his protection.
Paes is a prominent figure in Indian tennis and enjoys widespread popularity across the country. He is expected to play a significant role in the upcoming elections and may need to travel extensively throughout the state for campaigning. In light of security concerns, the Home Ministry decided to provide him with ‘X’ category protection.
This security classification includes two armed police personnel but does not involve any commandos.
Recently, Paes joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Following his induction, he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
After meeting with Modi, Paes expressed that the Prime Minister honored him as a Bengali and shared his vision for youth and sports. “I am here to further that mission,” he stated.
Paes mentioned that PM Modi has entrusted him with significant responsibilities in preparation for the 2036 Olympics. He is fully committed to serving the nation and is ready to face any challenges that come his way.
Leander Paes is the only Indian tennis player to have won an Olympic medal in singles, securing a bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Additionally, he has clinched a total of 18 Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles.
