Landslide in Dhanbad: 20 Homes Collapsed, NH-32 Blocked

Dhanbad, April 24: The Koylanchal region of Dhanbad was shaken by a severe landslide late Thursday night. In the Tandabadi settlement under Sonardih OP, the ground suddenly caved in with a loud explosion, swallowing around 20 homes into 10 to 20 feet deep pits.

During the incident, several family members of Suraj Ram were trapped under the debris but were rescued with the help of local residents. One of the injured is reported to be in critical condition and has been referred to Dhanbad for better treatment, while others received local medical care. This area has already been declared sensitive and dangerous due to uncontrolled coal mining activities.

Most residents were either asleep or preparing for bed when the ground began to collapse with a loud bang. The homes of former chief Meenakshi Rani Gudiya and several others were completely destroyed. Fortunately, many managed to escape their homes, although a car parked in one of the houses was also swallowed by the ground.

Following the incident, displaced families expressed their anger against the management of BCCL (Bharat Coking Coal Limited) and administrative negligence. Furious villagers blocked NH-32, demanding safety and fair rehabilitation. Protesters claim that due to BCCL’s negligence, dozens of families have become homeless. In light of the situation’s seriousness, a large number of local police and CISF personnel have been deployed to the area.

Efforts are ongoing by the administration to convince residents and restore traffic, but affected families are insisting on written assurances for safe rehabilitation and compensation. The blockade on NH-32 continued into Friday morning, creating an atmosphere of fear throughout the area.

Meanwhile, in the Kenduadih region, Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha staged an indefinite protest against the closure of the Dhanbad-Bokaro main road due to a previous landslide. He stated that this crucial route has been closed for the past nine days, severely affecting daily life. The MLA accused the district administration, municipal corporation, and BCCL of negligence, stating that no effective measures have been taken despite the serious situation.
