Kolkata, May 6: Following the announcement of the West Bengal Assembly election results, Kolkata Police issued a warning on Tuesday against individuals spreading fake or misleading posts on social media aimed at inciting unrest in the city.
In a statement, the police noted that numerous misleading posts were circulating online after the election results, with unrelated videos and images from other locations being inaccurately linked to Kolkata. The police are closely monitoring such content and will take strict legal action against those attempting to spread misinformation and disrupt public peace.
The police further assured that the situation in the city remains under control and urged citizens not to share such posts. The statement read, “The situation in Kolkata is completely under control. Citizens are requested not to believe or share unverified posts.”
This action by Kolkata Police comes in response to the viral spread of photos and videos depicting incidents of violence in the city and surrounding areas after the election results were declared.
After more than a decade, a significant political shift has occurred in the state. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has ousted the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, winning 207 out of 294 assembly seats, while TMC’s seats have plummeted from 215 in 2021 to just 80.
On the morning following the BJP’s victory, security outside TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee’s residence was notably reduced. Only a few police officers are stationed outside her ancestral home on Harish Chatterjee Street (30B). Despite her party’s electoral defeat in the Bhawanipur constituency and her own loss, Banerjee has yet to resign from her position as Chief Minister.
