Kolkata, September 3: The Kolkata High Court has ordered the immediate removal and demolition of two temporary structures associated with the ‘Sevashray’ health camp in the Falta area of South 24 Parganas district. This health initiative is linked to Abhishek Banerjee, the general secretary of the Trinamool Congress and MP from Diamond Harbour.
The directive was issued by a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Atarup Banerjee during a hearing of a petition.
Petitioner Aminuddin Khan claimed that these structures were illegally erected on a playground. He stated that the health camp had been closed for some time, yet the structures remained, preventing local residents from using the field.
The petition highlighted that the playground was previously utilized for school sports events, cricket and football competitions, as well as various government and social gatherings.
Following the hearing, the court ordered the immediate removal and demolition of the two temporary structures built in the name of the ‘Sevashray’ health camp.
Last year, Abhishek Banerjee initiated the ‘Sevashray’ health camps to provide healthcare services to residents in various parts of the Diamond Harbour constituency. Several temporary camps were established ahead of the assembly elections.
However, after a change in power in West Bengal this year, numerous complaints regarding these camps have emerged, including allegations of irregularities and serious medical negligence.
Reports indicate that some camps were operated by medical students and interns instead of registered doctors. There are also claims that some patients faced severe health issues due to improper treatment received at these facilities.
In July, while addressing the West Bengal Assembly, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that the state health department would conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged irregularities at the Sevashray health camps.
