Seoul, June 18: Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, sharply criticized international calls for nuclear disarmament on Thursday. She stated that the country’s nuclear weapons are integral to its “core national interests” and that disarmament is a matter that cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
According to North Korea’s state news agency KCNA, Kim Yo-jong labeled the demands from the United States and its allies for North Korea to disarm as “outdated thinking.”
Her remarks followed a joint statement issued during the G7 summit held in Évian-les-Bains, France, where G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to North Korea’s “complete nuclear disarmament” in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Rejecting the G7’s demands entirely, Kim Yo-jong declared that the issue of nuclear disarmament is now “irreversibly concluded” and cannot be implemented.
She asserted, “Nuclear weapons are the most powerful means of protecting our sovereignty and are the cornerstone of ensuring peace in our country. According to our laws, they serve as a means of self-defense.”
Furthermore, she warned that any nation attempting to undermine the core interests of a nuclear-armed state would face severe consequences and would invite destruction upon itself.
It is noteworthy that DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) is the official name for North Korea.
