Khelo India Mission Aims to Make India a Sports Powerhouse: Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has presented the Union Budget for the financial year 2026-27, highlighting the sports sector as a key area for employment, skill development, and job creation. She proposed the launch of the Khelo India Mission to transform India’s sports landscape over the next decade.

In her budget speech, Ms. Sitharaman stated, “The sports sector offers numerous opportunities for employment, skill development, and jobs. Building upon the systematic nurturing of sports talents initiated through the Khelo India programme, I propose to launch the Khelo India Mission to revolutionise the sports sector in the coming decade.”

Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya welcomed the proposals under the Khelo India Mission included in the budget. On the X platform, he praised the initiatives planned for the next ten years under the mission.

He wrote, “Building champions means building a developed India. The Khelo India Mission aims to properly nurture sports talents and establish India as a global sports powerhouse in the next ten years.”

Dr. Mandaviya also highlighted five key focus areas through which the government will work to promote sports as well as employment generation under the mission.

The government plans to position India as a major sports power on the world map within the next decade. The Khelo India Mission is not limited to sports, entertainment, or health alone but is set to become a major driver of the country’s economy and job market, which will significantly benefit the Indian economy.

Under the mission, players will be identified, trained, and prepared for major platforms. There will be large-scale training of certified coaches, high-performance directors, and scouts. This will open up career opportunities in coaching for aspiring players. The government also aims to form professional teams to keep athletes mentally and physically fit, increasing demand for physiotherapists, sports psychologists, and diet experts. Employment in sports medicine will also rise.

Additionally, the mission will connect sports management and event organising companies with youth, creating millions of jobs in stadium maintenance and logistics. Under the Make in India initiative, India will start manufacturing sports equipment like high-quality bats and shoes, attracting significant investment and further expanding job opportunities.

The government’s goal is to improve India’s performance in the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.
