New Delhi, August 25: The Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Hari Ranjan Rao, stated that incorporating sports into school curricula is not a new concept for India. It has been part of the education system for years.
Rao remarked, “Integrating sports into school curricula is not a novel idea for our country. Former athletes over 60 years old tell us that physical education and participation in sports were essential during their school days. Gradually, I believe we have moved away from that. Our priorities have shifted, and we need to bring it back.”
He added, “Through the revamped Khelo India scheme, we are now working on multiple levels. By initiating more competitions and leagues at schools, colleges, universities, and district levels, we aim to connect more children and athletes to the sporting ecosystem, providing them with more opportunities to engage in sports.”
International table tennis player and Arjuna Awardee G. Sathiyan expressed his happiness, stating, “I am truly delighted that our Prime Minister has been a tremendous support for all athletes. He has made it a habit to meet and honor athletes, which has significantly elevated the respect for them. We have received the recognition we deserve, thanks to the government’s substantial role.”
Sathiyan further commented, “I believe that the new Gen Z and the younger generation are bolder than ever. They genuinely want to take bold steps and try what they love. I am confident that parents play a crucial role in this. As a young person, you really look up to your parents and listen to their guidance, which helps you find your path.”
