Amman, August 12 (Kiran News). The foreign ministers of Syria and Jordan, along with the US envoy for Syrian affairs, met in Amman on Tuesday to discuss measures aimed at strengthening stability and security under Syria’s new government.
According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani held talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US envoy Tom Barrack, focusing on ways to enhance cooperation and coordination between the three sides. The meeting resulted in an agreement to form a joint task force to reinforce the ceasefire in Sweida province and work towards a comprehensive resolution of the crisis.
The meeting was a follow-up to talks held in Amman on July 19, which addressed sectarian violence in Sweida that claimed 1,400 lives within a week, prompting the ceasefire.
Concerns over security among minority communities have remained high since the fall of long-time ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, following an Islamist-led offensive. Subsequent violence, including the killing of more than 1,700 Alawite civilians in coastal areas in March 2025 and the Sweida unrest, has deepened these fears.
Jordan’s King Abdullah II separately met Shaibani and Barrack, reiterating his support for Syria’s stability, security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He stressed the importance of Washington’s role in Syria’s reconstruction, emphasising that the process must safeguard the rights of all Syrians.
The King also expressed Jordan’s readiness to share its institutional expertise with Syria and highlighted the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation in combating terrorism, arms smuggling, and drug trafficking.
According to the Syrian statement, the meeting welcomed Damascus’s efforts to restore basic services, hold violators accountable, and prepare for the return of displaced people.
