Keshav Mahanta Triumphs in Kaliabor Assembly Election, Defeating Independent Candidate Jiten

Guwahati, May 4: The Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) has emerged victorious in the Kaliabor Assembly constituency. Keshav Mahanta, the party’s candidate, faced off against independent contender Jiten Goud. In a closely contested election, the people of Kaliabor have chosen AGP’s Mahanta to represent them.

Keshav Mahanta won decisively, defeating his opponent by a margin of 17,890 votes. He secured a total of 74,029 votes, while independent candidate Jiten Goud garnered 56,139 votes.

Voting in the Kaliabor constituency took place on April 9, with a remarkable turnout. This election saw an impressive voter participation rate of 86.04%. The total number of registered voters in the constituency is 189,648, comprising 94,311 male voters and 95,331 female voters.

This election featured four candidates vying for the seat. Alongside Keshav Mahanta from the AGP, Pradeep Kumar Barua represented the Raijor Dal, while two other candidates ran as independents.

Kaliabor is a significant electoral district in Assam, falling under the Kaziranga Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2021 elections, the constituency recorded a voter turnout of 89%, where Keshav Mahanta defeated Congress’s Prashant Kumar Saikia. In 2016, Mahanta also won against Congress candidate Bindu Ganjoo, with a turnout of 84.7%. Mahanta first won the Kaliabor seat in 2006 and successfully retained it in 2011.

Keshav Mahanta holds a postgraduate degree and identifies as a social worker and politician. According to his election affidavit, he possesses assets worth ₹5.3 crore and has no pending criminal cases against him.

Since its establishment in 1951, Kaliabor has witnessed 16 assembly elections, including a by-election in 1986. Historically, the Congress and AGP have dominated this constituency, but this time, Congress did not field a candidate.
