Bengaluru, May 28: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has officially resigned from his position. This resignation marks the end of a prolonged struggle within the Karnataka Congress. Several party leaders had previously indicated that D.K. Shivakumar would be the next Chief Minister.
As per the schedule, Siddaramaiah left his official residence and arrived at the Raj Bhavan, where he submitted his resignation to the officials. Since the Governor is currently out of the state, Siddaramaiah handed over his resignation to the Raj Bhavan officials.
Following his resignation, Siddaramaiah addressed a press conference, stating, “I have submitted my resignation to the Governor’s office. The Governor is not here; he will return tonight. Therefore, I have submitted my resignation to his office.”
He further mentioned, “I have always said that I would resign whenever the high command directs me. Thus, I am submitting my resignation today. It is understood that this paves the way for the next Chief Minister. Our responsibility towards our welfare remains intact. There is no disappointment. Our party won with 135+1 seats, and two independent candidates also supported our government.”
Siddaramaiah emphasized that the Constitution is supreme and that they have tried to adhere to its principles. “We have attempted to speak in accordance with the constitutional principles. People have regarded us as dedicated followers. Our supporters and fans stood by us. I have had the opportunity to serve the seven crore people of Karnataka. I have also had the chance to be Chief Minister twice and Leader of the Opposition twice. I thank Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and our president Mallikarjun Kharge for these opportunities,” he added.
He also affirmed that the Congress holds a majority and that all legislators support D.K. Shivakumar. “I have been Chief Minister twice and Leader of the Opposition twice. I thank the legislators and MPs for their support,” he stated.
Earlier on Thursday morning, a meeting was convened at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, which included D.K. Shivakumar. During this meeting, Siddaramaiah announced his resignation. Karnataka Excise Minister R.B. Timmapur, a close associate of Siddaramaiah, became emotional while discussing the meeting.
Timmapur noted that when Siddaramaiah mentioned his resignation, all cabinet members became emotional. Most ministers struggled to hold back tears. Seeing his ministers in tears also moved Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
When D.K. Shivakumar arrived at the Chief Minister’s residence for the meeting, he sought Siddaramaiah’s blessings by touching his feet, and the two embraced, a moment captured in viral images on social media.
