Mangalore, February 10: Karnataka police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) concerning a college student who eloped with a Muslim man in the communally sensitive Mangalore district. The incident involves a 23-year-old college student from the Surathkal area who reportedly left with Mohammad Midlaj.
The FIR was filed following a complaint from the student’s parents, who reported her missing and expressed concerns about their inability to contact her. According to police, the student hails from the Kasargod district of Kerala and was studying at a college in Surathkal, residing in a postgraduate hostel.
It has been revealed that she legally married Mohammad Midlaj on January 31, with the marriage registered at the sub-registrar’s office in Wayanad, Kerala. The student’s parents discovered the situation recently and visited the hostel where she was staying. During their inquiry, they obtained CCTV footage showing their daughter leaving the hostel on February 9. After that, they lost contact with her and filed a missing person’s report at the Surathkal police station.
Police confirmed that the FIR was registered based on the complaint, and the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are actively searching for the student and trying to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a related case, a woman from Kolkata has lodged a complaint at the High Grounds police station, alleging that her husband coerced her into converting to Islam, married her, and abandoned her after the birth of their child. The accused has been identified as Syed Imtiyaz, a resident of BTM Layout in Bengaluru.
The complainant has also recorded a video detailing her experience, which has since gone viral on social media.
