Bengaluru, May 7: Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister and state Congress president, D.K. Shivakumar, criticized Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday. He condemned the governor’s alleged decision to deny the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam, led by actor Vijay, the opportunity to form a government and prove its majority in the assembly. Shivakumar labeled this move as undemocratic.
Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, Shivakumar emphasized that the governor has no authority to prevent any party from claiming to form a government if it holds a majority. He stated that the Tamil Nadu governor has no right to stop Vijay from forming a government and proving his majority. The governor’s conduct, he remarked, is inappropriate.
Drawing comparisons with previous political events in Karnataka and at the national level, Shivakumar noted that governors and presidents have historically allowed the largest parties to form governments and secure confidence votes in the assembly or parliament. He mentioned that former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa was permitted to form a government in Karnataka. Similarly, former Presidents K.R. Narayanan and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam followed the same approach. Even Atal Bihari Vajpayee was allowed to form a government and prove his majority in the house.
Shivakumar insisted that Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam should also be given the chance to prove its majority. He further stated that this is democracy, where a single vote can determine a majority or minority. If they fail to prove their majority, then alternative options can be considered.
The Deputy Chief Minister also stressed the importance of respecting the mandate and sentiments of the state’s people. He asserted that the feelings of the state’s populace must be honored.
