Chennai, May 17: Renowned South Indian actor and politician Kamal Haasan has outlined six crucial demands to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, aimed at strengthening the future of Tamil cinema. He believes the film industry is facing new challenges, and without timely intervention, thousands connected to the industry could be adversely affected.
In a personal meeting with Chief Minister Vijay, Haasan shared his vision for the development of Tamil Nadu. He expressed pride in the humility and affection shown by the Chief Minister during their discussion.
Haasan stated, “I presented six demands to the Tamil Nadu government. I highlighted that the Tamil film industry is currently facing numerous challenges. If appropriate measures are not taken soon, it could impact the thousands of people involved in the film sector. The industry needs support and love, and I hope this will yield positive results.”
Among his demands, the most significant is the establishment of a government-run OTT platform. He emphasized, “The government should create a platform where people can watch Tamil films, independent movies, and documentaries at a low cost. This will provide opportunities for small filmmakers and new artists to showcase their talent while promoting Tamil language and culture.”
Additionally, Haasan requested the removal of the four percent entertainment tax on films. He pointed out, “The cost of filmmaking has significantly increased. Theater operators are also facing higher expenses for electricity, staff, and other necessities. This tax has become an additional burden. If the government removes it, producers and theater owners will find relief, encouraging more investment in film production and improving theater operations.”
Haasan also called for action against digital piracy. He noted that illegal copies of films often appear online immediately after release, severely impacting box office revenues. This issue affects not only producers but the entire industry.
He proposed the formation of a dedicated anti-piracy team within the Tamil Nadu police’s cybercrime department. This team would work to promptly remove leaked films from the internet, thereby preventing piracy.
Moreover, Haasan advocated for relief for theater owners, suggesting that all cinemas in Tamil Nadu should be allowed to run five shows daily for each film. This would increase theater revenues and provide audiences with more options.
He also demanded that films should not be released on OTT platforms for at least eight weeks after their theatrical debut. He explained that early digital releases harm theaters, leading audiences to avoid cinema visits.
Lastly, Haasan urged the government to introduce a new incentive scheme to promote film production. He stated that with government support, Tamil Nadu could once again emerge as a major film production hub, creating new job opportunities and benefiting tourism in the state.
