New Delhi, March 9: Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, announced on Monday that the Namibian cheetah named Jwala has successfully given birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park. This marks her third successful litter.
In a post on the social media platform X, the minister stated that with this birth, the number of healthy cubs born in India has risen to 33. This event signifies the tenth successful breeding of cheetahs on Indian soil and represents another significant milestone in India’s cheetah conservation journey.
The minister described this moment as a source of immense pride for the “Project Cheetah,” highlighting the dedicated efforts, skills, and commitment of veterinarians, field staff, and all those involved in the project who tirelessly work on the ground. He also noted that with the arrival of these cubs, the total number of cheetahs in India has now reached 53.
Describing it as a historic and heartwarming moment for wildlife conservation, the minister expressed hope that Jwala and her cubs will thrive and elevate India’s cheetah narrative to new heights. He stated, “A historic and touching moment for wildlife conservation. May Jwala and her cubs grow strong and take India’s cheetah story to even greater heights.”
Recently, another cheetah from South Africa named Gamini also became a mother for the second time, giving birth to four cubs. Additionally, on February 28, the minister announced the release of nine cheetahs from Botswana—six females and three males—into quarantine enclosures at Kuno National Park. These cheetahs are currently undergoing adaptation and health monitoring before being gradually released into the larger forest area.
