Jillian Lauren, Wife of Weezer’s Bassist, Shot by Police in Attempted Murder Incident

Jillian Lauren, the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, is facing attempted murder charges following a police shooting incident that unfolded at her home in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles. Lauren, an author, was wounded by gunfire in what police describe as an intense sequence of events that began with a car crash and escalated to a standoff with law enforcement.

What Led to the Incident?

The sequence of events began on Tuesday, when California Highway Patrol officers were chasing three suspects who had fled the scene of a misdemeanor hit-and-run on the Ventura Freeway. Around 3:25 p.m. local time, officers called for backup as the suspects ran into a nearby residential area. One suspect was spotted running behind a house on Waldo Place, where Lauren resides.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers saw a woman holding a pistol in a neighboring yard. The woman was later identified as Jillian Lauren Shriner. Police instructed her to drop the handgun multiple times, but she reportedly refused. According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), Lauren then pointed the handgun at the officers, prompting them to open fire.

The Shooting and Aftermath

Lauren, 51, was struck by gunfire and retreated into her home, according to police. Local news footage captured the moment when Lauren emerged from her house, face down on the ground, with officers handcuffing her. She was later removed from the scene on a stretcher and transported to a hospital, where she was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her shoulder.

Despite not being involved in the initial hit-and-run incident, Lauren was “absentee booked” for attempted murder due to her confrontation with law enforcement. An absentee booking is typically used when a suspect is receiving medical care and cannot be immediately processed into the jail system. A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered from Lauren’s home.

No Involvement in the Hit-and-Run

Police have clarified that Jillian Lauren was not involved in the hit-and-run crash that initially triggered the police pursuit. While one of the three suspects involved in the crash was detained and cited by the California Highway Patrol, Lauren’s actions in her yard led to the police shooting.

Lauren was released on bond on Wednesday, and her court date is set for April 30. At the time of writing, NPR had not received a response from Lauren’s representatives regarding the incident, and the local prosecutor’s office had not yet commented on potential charges.

This remains a developing story, with further details expected as the investigation unfolds.
