Jharkhand Weather Update: Kal Baisakhi Brings Thunderstorms, Lightning, and Gusty Winds Until April 18
By Staff Writer . Weather & Climate News . April 16, 2025
Ranchi, India โ The weather across Jharkhand has taken a stormy turn over the past 10 days with frequent lightning, thunder, and gusty winds โ a phenomenon attributed to the Kal Baisakhi system affecting eastern India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that these conditions will persist until April 18.
What is Kal Baisakhi and Why is It Affecting Jharkhand?
According to IMD scientist Abhishek Anand, Kal Baisakhi is a seasonal storm that occurs primarily in April and May across eastern states like Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. It is marked by intense thunder, lightning, sudden rain, and strong winds, caused by the influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
The active system has significantly altered local weather, bringing relief from heat while also posing risks of lightning and strong winds.
Thunderstorm Activity to Continue Until April 18
Abhishek Anand confirmed that parts of Jharkhand will continue to witness light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning until April 18. Winds are expected to blow at 30โ50 km/h, especially in the late afternoon and evening hours, increasing the potential for localized damage and disruption.
On Tuesday, Ranchi and nearby areas experienced partly cloudy skies with moderate wind speeds, which helped bring down daytime heat levels.
