Jeffrey Sachs Praises Adani Group for Its Role in Sustainable Development

Economist Jeffrey Sachs commends the Adani Group for its contributions to sustainable development and infrastructure in India.

Varanasi, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : World-renowned economist and director of Columbia University’s Center for Sustainable Development, Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs, recently praised the Adani Group and its social development arm, the Adani Foundation, for their efforts in sustainable development both in India and globally. Speaking at the “Ancient Knowledge for Modern Challenges” conference held in Varanasi, Sachs highlighted the Adani Group as a key driver of change, progress, and infrastructure development in India.

He stated, “The group plays a vital role in the country’s infrastructure-based development journey, and its contribution to economic progress is noteworthy.” In his opening remarks, Sachs emphasized that large family-owned business groups are not merely commercial entities; they carry with them family values, heritage, and a sense of social responsibility.

Referring to the Adani Group, he urged such enterprises to consider what they are giving back to the communities in which they operate. In discussing corporate social responsibility and governance, Sachs cited former Unilever CEO Paul Polman, who aimed to transform Unilever into a socially responsible company, despite facing opposition from investors focused solely on financial gains.

Sachs also expressed concern about the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI). He noted that while pursuing business opportunities, it is equally important to pay attention to the potential risks associated with AI. He referenced the American AI company Anthropic, whose CEO Dario Amodei warns of serious threats posed by AI technology while the company simultaneously moves towards a large initial public offering (IPO).

He insisted that in such circumstances, it is crucial to prioritize the risks associated with technology and their social implications over business ambitions. Sachs stressed that to address the challenges facing the world today, it is essential to maintain a balance between economic development, social responsibility, and technological innovation. He concluded by stating that sustainable development is only possible when industries, governments, and society collectively prioritize long-term interests.
