Mumbai, May 6: Hindi cinema has a long tradition of addressing social and sensitive issues. In this vein, the comedy-drama film ‘Dukaan’ has received a warm reception from audiences since its release. The film tackles the complex and emotional subject of surrogacy.
Notably, the film premiered at the prestigious ‘Fourth Yokohama International Film Festival’ in Japan. The red carpet event took place on May 2, followed by an official screening at the ‘Betty and Deck Theater’ on May 4. After the screening, the audience gave the film a standing ovation.
The filmmakers shared their experience, stating, “Receiving love from Japanese audiences has been a memorable experience for us. This is a prestigious festival, and simply being here is a significant achievement.”
Directed by Siddharth Singh and Garima Wahal, the filmmakers explained why the story of surrogacy is close to their hearts. They said, “As writers, we nurture our scripts like a child, but ultimately, we have to hand it over to someone else. This emotional connection inspired us to create ‘Dukaan.’”
The film centers around Jasmine (Monika Panwar), who opens a ‘shop of hopes’ for childless couples through surrogacy, but later faces emotional struggles.
Set against the backdrop of Gujarat, the film features Monika Panwar, Sikandar Kher, Soham Majumdar, and Monali Thakur in lead roles. Actor Vrajesh Hirji also makes a special cameo. Produced under the banners of Webband Productions and Kalmakar Picture Productions by A. Jhunjhunwala and S.K. Ahluwalia, the film’s cinematography by Anirban Chatterjee and music by Shreyas Puranik enhance its emotional depth.
This film not only entertains but also sheds light on aspects of surrogacy that are often overlooked.
