Rome, May 10: World number one Jannik Sinner has made a spectacular start at the Italian Open. He defeated Sebastian Ofner in the second round with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Sinner showcased his exceptional skills in front of a home crowd, dominating the match throughout. He committed only five unforced errors in the first set, denying his opponent any chance for a comeback. Sinner broke serve early with a delicate drop shot, taking full control of the match, which lasted one hour and 31 minutes.
With this victory, Sinner’s winning streak at the ATP Masters 1000 has reached 29 matches, tying him with Roger Federer for the third-longest streak in the series.
After the match, Sinner expressed his joy, stating, “I am very happy to be here. From day one, this tournament has been very special for me. As an Italian, you think about this tournament every year.”
In the third round, Sinner will face Alexei Popyrin, who advanced by defeating Jakub Menšik 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Having reached the finals in Rome last year, Sinner aims to become the first Italian player to win this tournament since Adriano Panatta in 1976.
Sinner also has a chance to complete the career Golden Masters. If he wins the Italian Open, following victories in Paris, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and Madrid, he will join Novak Djokovic as the only player to achieve this feat since the series began in 1990.
