Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express Becomes the Preferred Choice for Travelers

New Delhi, May 12: The Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express service has received an overwhelming response from passengers. According to the Ministry of Railways, this modern train service, which commenced between Jammu and Kashmir, has transported nearly 45,000 passengers in its first 10 days of operation. The ministry states that this train is becoming a new lifeline for Jammu and Kashmir.

An official statement revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the historic 272-kilometer Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link on June 6, 2025. Following this, on April 30, 2026, Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the 20-coach Jammu Tawi-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express. From May 2 to May 11, the four train services on this route carried a total of 44,727 passengers.

According to the Ministry of Railways, in the first week alone, 28,762 passengers traveled. This figure indicates the rapidly increasing demand for travel on the Jammu-Kashmir rail corridor.

On this route, trains numbered 26401 and 26402 operate between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar six days a week, while trains 26403 and 26404 run on all days except Wednesdays. Thus, passengers have access to four train services for travel on most days.

The railway reports that on several days, passenger numbers approached full capacity. On May 3, 4,977 passengers traveled, and by May 10, this number had risen to 5,657. On Sundays, the average occupancy of the trains exceeded 98%, showcasing the growing popularity of this route.

Railway officials noted that while the initial eight-coach trains were fully booked, the 20-coach trains are also filling up quickly.

This train service is not just a mode of transport; it has significantly impacted the economy and lives of people in Jammu and Kashmir. Now, pilgrims, students, traders, government employees, and tourists can travel comfortably and without interruptions.

Tourists are now reaching Kashmir via the Vande Bharat train, enjoying views of world-class railway bridges like Chenab and Anji. The train is specially designed to operate in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, ensuring a smooth journey even during snowfall and landslides.

The Ministry of Railways further stated that the Jammu-Srinagar Vande Bharat has emerged as the most economical travel option on this route. The chair car ticket includes meals, and its price is significantly lower than that of air travel or taxis.

While flight tickets can be burdensome for travelers, the Vande Bharat train offers a comfortable and safe travel experience at a lower cost. Notably, even when highways are closed, the train service remains a reliable option for passengers.

The rail journey from Jammu to Srinagar is considered one of the most beautiful rail routes in the world. High mountains, long tunnels, and remarkable engineering bridges like Chenab and Anji, along with the lush valleys of Kashmir, provide travelers with a memorable experience.

The Ministry of Railways asserts that Indian Railways is keeping this special journey accessible to the public by offering services at fares lower than operational costs.

With the onset of summer, a rapid increase in tourist numbers in Kashmir is anticipated. This train will prove to be a significant convenience for travelers heading to tourist destinations like Dal Lake, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg.

Passengers can now travel from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar in less than five hours. In the coming months, the number of travelers on this route is expected to rise even further.
