Mohali (Punjab), March 5 : Ravindra Jadeja starred with his unbeaten 175 as India posted a mammoth 574 for 8 declared, before Indian spinners restricted Sri Lanka to 108 for 4 at stumps on Day 2 of the first Test here on Saturday. Sri Lanka trail India by 466 runs with six wickets in hand. At the end of the day, Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka were batting on 1 and 26, respectively. Jadeja tormented the Sri Lankan attack along with Ravichandran Ashwin who joined the party to score his 12th fifty and exhibit his batting skills. Both added 130 runs partnership for 7th wicket. The bowling allrounder also was involved in two more big partnerships. A 104-run partnership for 6th wicket and an unbeaten 103 runs partnership with Mohammad Shami (20 no) for 9th wicket. Resuming his overnight score of 45, Jadeja took to cleaners a listless Sri Lanka attack to help himself register a career best knock and become the highest scorer batting at No. 7. Sri Lanka were hampered with Lahiru Kumara’s absence, who had left the field midway on the first day, and was almost out of the Test match. India marched past 500 after Jadeja lofted Lasith Embuldeniya for a six straight down the ground and then swatted him behind square for back-to-back boundaries. Mohammad Shami and Jadeja frustrated Sri Lanka by scripting a 103-run partnership for the 9th wicket before captain Rohit Sharma declared the innings. In response, Sri Lanka openers Lahiru Thirimanne (17) and Dimuth Karunaratne (28) put on 48 runs for the first wicket before being dismissed by Ashwin and Jadeja, respectively. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Angelo Mathews for 22 as Sri Lanka managed to limp to 100 runs mark in 35th over. Ashwin came back strongly to bag his second wicket by trapping Dhananjaya de Silva in front for one. Probably it is too early to make a call, but it will require Sri Lanka to put their heads down and avoid following on when their overnight batsmen go out on the third day. The cracks in the pitch are opening up, but still it does not have devils in it. Earlier, Ashwin (61), along with centurion Jadeja, stitched a 130-run partnership for the seventh wicket before India reached 468 for 7 at lunch. India plundered a whopping 111 runs in the morning session, losing only Ashwin’s wicket. The Sri Lankan attack looked clueless in Lahiru Kumara’s absence. The pacer suffered a hamstring on Friday and did not take the field on Saturday. According to former Sri Lankan player and commentator Russell Arnold, Kumara will be out of the action for at least two weeks. It was close to lunch that Suranga Lakmal picked up Ashwin’s wicket with a flurry of bouncers. Otherwise, Ashwin was all treat for the fans at the stadium. His silken flicks and well-timed drives reminded them of the class of VVS Laxman. Earlier, Rishabh Pant hammered 96 to help India reach 357 for six. He missed his century after he was cleaned up by Lakmal. Pant put on a vital stand of 104 with Jadeja, who remained 45 not out at stumps on the opening day. Pant reached his 8th Test half-century and then walloped Lasith Embuldeniya for two sixes and two fours in a 22-run over. He continued his blitz before being sent back by Lakmal. Hanuma Vihari (58) also hogged the limelight on Day 1 and looked comfortable in the company of Virat Kohli, who surpassed the 8,000 run-mark in his 100th Test match. Brief Scores: India 574/8 d (Ravindra Jadeja 175*, Rishabh Pant 96, Hanuma Vihari 58, Suranga Lakmal 2-90) lead Sri Lanka 108/4 (Pathum Nissanka 26*; R Ashwin 2-21) by 466 runs. BDN ING
