Ahmedabad, March 9: Team India has claimed the T20 World Cup 2026 title by defeating New Zealand. Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan has lauded the current Indian team following this historic win, declaring it the best team in white-ball cricket. He praised head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav for their leadership.
This victory marks India’s third T20 World Cup title. Under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil. Speaking to reporters in Ahmedabad after the match, Pathan stated that the current Indian team has established itself as the strongest white-ball team.
“There is no doubt that this is the best white-ball team,” he said. Pathan credited Suryakumar’s leadership and Gambhir’s role in creating a strong and united team that consistently delivers results on the global stage. He remarked, “The way Suryakumar led the team and how Gautam Gambhir kept everyone together was remarkable.”
Pathan expressed his admiration for Gambhir, who attributed the victory to Ajit Agarkar, VVS Laxman, and Rahul Dravid. He noted that this reflects Gambhir’s integrity. “When your heart is pure and your intentions are right, you achieve results. Indian cricket has reaped the rewards, and there’s no doubt that everyone prayed for this,” he added.
India has now become the first team in the world to defend the T20 World Cup title, securing it for a record third time. Previously, India won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and 2024. In the final match, India batted first, scoring 255 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. In response, New Zealand was bowled out for 159 runs in just 19 overs.
