IPL 2026: MI Secures Major Win but Remains Ninth; Who Holds the Orange and Purple Caps?

Mumbai, May 5: The 47th match of IPL 2026 took place on Monday evening at the Wankhede Stadium, featuring the Mumbai Indians (MI) against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). MI achieved its largest target in IPL history, defeating LSG by six wickets.

LSG set a formidable target of 229 runs for MI. With Ryan Rickelton scoring 83 runs off 32 balls and Rohit Sharma contributing 84 runs off 44 balls, MI successfully chased down the target in just 18.4 overs, losing four wickets in the process. Surya Kumar Yadav captained MI in place of Hardik Pandya, who was unable to play due to illness.

Despite the victory, the points table saw minimal changes. The Punjab Kings currently lead with 13 points from nine matches. The Royal Challengers Bangalore follow in second place with 12 points from nine matches, while Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans are tied for third to fifth, each with 12 points from ten matches.

The Chennai Super Kings hold sixth place with eight points from nine matches, followed by the Delhi Capitals also with eight points from nine matches. The Kolkata Knight Riders are in eighth place with seven points from nine matches, while MI sits ninth with six points from ten matches. LSG is at the bottom in tenth place with just four points from nine matches.

The ranking differences among teams with similar points are attributed to their net run rates.

Abhishek Sharma of Sunrisers Hyderabad retains the Orange Cap, having scored 440 runs in ten innings across ten matches. KL Rahul from Delhi Capitals follows closely in second place with 433 runs in nine innings.

The Purple Cap is held by Bhuvneshwar Kumar of Royal Challengers Bangalore, who has taken 17 wickets in nine matches. Anshul Kamboj from Chennai Super Kings is in second place, also with 17 wickets from nine matches.
