IPL 2026: Chennai Super Kings Strengths and Weaknesses Analyzed

New Delhi, March 15: The five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign on March 30 against Rajasthan Royals. This season, Chennai has placed its bets on young talent. They have acquired Prashant Kishor and Kartik Sharma for a hefty sum of ₹14.20 crores. Additionally, they have traded for Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals.

Chennai Super Kings’ batting lineup appears robust this year. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will have explosive batsman Sanju Samson by his side. Samson had an outstanding performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026, scoring 321 runs in just five matches and earning the Player of the Tournament award.

Ayush Mhatre also made a significant impact with his batting last season. With strong Indian batsmen like Urvil Patel, Sarfaraz Khan, and Kartik Sharma, Chennai has a formidable lineup. Urvil played some impressive innings in IPL 2025. Moreover, Dewald Brevis has the potential to dismantle any bowling attack in the middle order. It will be interesting to see where MS Dhoni bats in IPL 2026.

Chennai Super Kings also boasts excellent all-rounders in Prashant Kishor, Jamie Overton, and Shivam Dube. Shivam’s recent form has been exceptional, which could benefit the team. Prashant is known for contributing with both bat and ball. However, the pace attack of Chennai seems a bit weak. Matt Henry’s T20 record is not particularly impressive compared to his ODI stats, and Nathan Ellis lacks extensive experience. Among Indian pacers, Chennai has Khalil Ahmed, Mukesh Choudhary, and Gurjapneet Singh. Khalil took 15 wickets in 14 matches last season, but his economy rate was a high 9.58.

Despite the absence of Ravindra Jadeja, Chennai’s spin department looks strong for IPL 2026. The team has quality spinners like Noor Ahmad, Shreyas Gopal, Akil Hussain, and Rahul Chahar. On the MA Chidambaram pitch, Noor Ahmad and Akil could pose significant challenges for batsmen. After finishing at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2025, Chennai aims for a strong comeback this season.
