New Delhi, May 20: According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India’s eight major infrastructure industries recorded a growth of 1.7% in April compared to the same month last year. This growth was driven by positive performance in the cement, steel, and electricity sectors.
In March, the final growth rate for these eight industries was recorded at 1.2%. The cumulative growth rate for the index of these industries from April to March 2025-26 was 2.7% compared to the same period last year.
Steel production saw a significant increase of 6.2% in April compared to the previous year. The cement sector experienced a robust growth of 9.5%, primarily due to strong demand fueled by substantial government investments in major infrastructure projects like highways, ports, and railways.
Electricity production also rose by 4.1% in April compared to the same period last year.
However, coal production fell by 8.7%, while crude oil output decreased by 3.9%. Natural gas production also saw a decline of 4.3% in April 2026 compared to the same month last year, and refinery products dropped by 0.5%.
Additionally, fertilizer production fell by 8.6% in April due to supply chain disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East.
The index of these eight major industries (ICI) measures the combined and individual production performance of coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers, steel, cement, and electricity.
These eight industries account for 40.27% of the total weight in the Industrial Production Index (IIP) and are considered a crucial indicator of the country’s overall industrial growth.
