India’s Blue Economy and Women-Led Growth Highlighted by President Murmu

New Delhi: The Budget Session of Parliament formally began on Wednesday, 28 January. In her address, President Droupadi Murmu highlighted India’s significant progress as the world’s second-largest fish producer, reflecting the country’s growing strength in the blue economy. She also noted India’s leading position in milk production, attributing this achievement to the success of the cooperative movement.

The President emphasized that the true measure of any justice system’s success lies in the extent to which it instills a sense of security and trust among citizens. She stated that the government is continuously working to integrate underdeveloped regions into the mainstream of development.

To promote employment and growth in rural areas, President Murmu mentioned the implementation of the ‘Viksit India Jee Ram Ji’ law, which guarantees 125 days of employment in villages. She added that strict measures to prevent corruption and leakages have been put in place, creating new opportunities for farmers, livestock rearers, and fishermen.

Addressing security concerns, the President explained that the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty is part of India’s fight against terrorism. She further informed that the ‘Mission Sudarshan Chakra’ is underway to strengthen national defence capabilities. The government’s forces have taken decisive action against Maoist terrorism as part of these efforts.

President Murmu stressed that the government believes national development is possible only when equal opportunities are available to all. With this vision, India is advancing under the mantra of women-led growth. She revealed that the government aims to empower three crore women by making them ‘Lakhpati Didi,’ which will further boost women’s empowerment and self-reliance.

Highlighting the country’s push towards self-reliance, the President said that products made under the ‘Make in India’ initiative are reaching global markets, generating widespread enthusiasm for indigenous goods among citizens.

She also warned about the risks posed by the misuse of artificial intelligence, citing deepfakes, misinformation, and fake content as growing challenges to democracy, social harmony, and public trust.

President Murmu praised the government’s progressive policies that have enabled women to advance rapidly in all ambitious sectors of the nation. She recalled a historic achievement when the first batch of women cadets graduated from the National Defence Academy, reinforcing the belief that ‘Nari Shakti’ leads the nation’s development and empowerment.

Additionally, she mentioned the government’s efforts in skill development, stating that 60,000 youths have been trained in semiconductors and one million are being trained in AI-related fields.

The President assured that the government is working sensitively for the welfare of Dalits, backward classes, tribal communities, and all citizens. She highlighted the positive impact of the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ vision, noting that social security schemes have expanded from covering 25 crore people in 2014 to nearly 95 crore beneficiaries today.

She further detailed financial support under various initiatives: approximately ₹38 lakh crore disbursed via the Mudra scheme, around 12 crore loans provided for employment, and ₹16 lakh crore extended to 72 lakh beneficiaries under the PM SVANidhi scheme. Currently, about two lakh startups are registered, employing over 20 lakh people, with nearly 40% of these startups having a female director.
