Indian Stock Market Weakness Presents Buying Opportunity, Report Indicates

Mumbai, March 4: The Indian stock market is currently experiencing some weakness, but this presents a favorable opportunity for long-term investors, according to a report released on Wednesday.

Global brokerage firm Morgan Stanley believes that the structural fundamentals of the Indian economy will remain intact, and income growth is expected to improve in 2026, despite the market grappling with short-term volatility.

The report states that the Indian stock market is reacting more sharply to negative news compared to positive developments, raising concerns among investors about potential structural issues.

However, Morgan Stanley disagrees with this perspective, viewing the current weakness as a result of market conditions and technical factors rather than a deep economic problem.

According to the report, corporate earnings growth has already begun to show signs of recovery after six quarters of decline, with a significant acceleration anticipated in 2026.

This improvement is expected to be supported by the reflationary policies of the Reserve Bank of India and the government.

Interest rate cuts, banking regulations, liquidity flow, sustained capital expenditure, tax relief measures, and a relatively growth-friendly budget are all contributing to a more supportive macroeconomic environment.

The brokerage noted that India’s post-COVID stringent policy stance has now eased, creating better conditions for growth.

Despite these positives, stock performance has been disappointing. The past 12-month return is among the historically weakest, and relative valuations are close to previous lows.

The report highlights that India’s share of global corporate profits is significantly higher than its weight in global indices, and the Sensex is trading at historically low levels compared to gold. In recent months, the position of foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) has also weakened.
