
Dhaka, February 17: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla arrived in Dhaka on Tuesday to represent the Indian government at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government. Tarique Rahman, president of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, will take the oath as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Leaders from various countries are also arriving in Bangladesh to attend the ceremony, following an invitation from Chief Advisor Yunus. According to Bangladeshi media outlet The Daily Star, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has also reached Dhaka for the event. The interim government’s foreign advisor, M. Touhid Hussain, welcomed him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated, “The Honorable Speaker’s participation in this important event reflects the deep and enduring friendship between the people of India and Bangladesh, reaffirming India’s strong commitment to the democratic values that bind our two nations.”
It further added, “As neighbors connected by shared history, culture, and mutual respect, India welcomes the formation of a government in Bangladesh under Tarique Rahman‘s leadership, which has garnered significant support from the people.”
Several prominent foreign guests, including Bhutan’s Prime Minister Shering Tobgay and foreign ministers from Nepal, Sri Lanka, and other countries, are set to attend the Prime Minister’s swearing-in ceremony.
The interim government has invited heads of state from over a dozen countries, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, among others. Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal from Pakistan and UK’s Minister for Indo-Pacific Affairs Seema Malhotra are also expected to participate in the summit.
It is noteworthy that 25 ministers from the BNP will take the oath in the new cabinet of Bangladesh. The list includes Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain, Abdul Awal Mintu, Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, Mizanur Rahman Minu, Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Khandakar Abdul Muktdir, Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Jahir Uddin Swapan, Afroza Khanam Rita, Md. Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Ani, Asadul Habib Dulu, Md. Asaduzzaman, Zakaria Tahir, Dipen Diwan, ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan, Sardar Md. Sakawat Hossain, Fakir Mahbub Anam, Sheikh Robiul Alam, Mohammad Amin ur Rashid, and Khalilur Rahman.
