Indian Railways Enhances Safety with Composite Sleepers and AI Monitoring

New Delhi, April 10: The Ministry of Railways has announced several initiatives aimed at making rail travel safer and more comfortable. According to an official statement, these measures include the use of composite sleepers near bridges and at points and crossings.

The ministry also revealed that AI-based technology will be employed for track monitoring. Special AI devices will be installed in inspection vehicles to facilitate this process.

Compared to the current heavy iron and concrete sleepers, the new composite sleepers will be lighter, capable of bearing more weight, and provide better cushioning. They will also be easier to install and maintain.

These sleepers can be designed and installed according to the specific needs of the location, ensuring greater comfort for passengers, especially when traversing bridges and points and crossings.

Composite sleepers are more durable than concrete and iron, made from mixed materials that can support up to 700 kilograms per square centimeter. This is expected to reduce maintenance costs for the railways.

To assess track conditions, ground penetration radar will be fitted in inspection vehicles, which will monitor the tracks with the help of AI. Additionally, magnetic particle testing technology will be adopted to improve welding quality, allowing for the detection of even minor defects.

According to the ministry, these decisions reflect the railways’ commitment to passenger safety and are steps taken toward ensuring secure and comfortable travel.

Furthermore, Indian Railways is prioritizing affordable travel by increasing the number of non-AC general and sleeper coaches. Passengers are being offered an average discount of up to 45% on fares to keep travel costs low.

The railways provides approximately ₹60,000 crores in passenger subsidies each year, with an additional ₹3,000 crores allocated for suburban areas like Mumbai.
