Indian Railways Approves ₹993 Crore Project to Enhance Chennai Suburban Rail Network

New Delhi, May 19: Indian Railways has approved the ₹993 crore Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project, spanning 68 kilometers. This announcement was made by the Ministry of Railways on Tuesday.

The ministry stated that this segment is a crucial part of the Chennai suburban circular rail network, connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam. This initiative reinforces the commitment to safe, fast, and efficient rail transport across the country.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project will facilitate passenger movement, reduce congestion, and enhance the transportation of cement, automobiles, and food grains. He noted that the project will strengthen both passenger and freight transport along the corridor, benefiting the movement of essential goods such as cement, automobiles, grains, iron, and steel.

According to the ministry, the existing double line is currently operating at full capacity, and traffic is expected to increase in the coming years, necessitating the expansion of infrastructure. The doubling work will reduce train stoppage times, improve punctuality, and increase the frequency of suburban services.

This route connects several major economic and industrial hubs, including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Irungattukottai, as well as significant sectors like the automobile, cement, and manufacturing industries. The proposed Parandur airport project near Kanchipuram is also close to this route, further enhancing its strategic importance.

The ministry further stated that the approval of the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu doubling project is another significant step in Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernize rail infrastructure, increase network capacity, and improve operational efficiency on major routes. This project is expected to strengthen suburban and freight connectivity, promote regional industrial development, and provide faster, safer, and more reliable transport services.
